New LSVT LOUD Pediatric Research Study Underway!
The research study “Neurocorrelates of intensive voice treatment effects on children with cerebral palsy” has kicked off! This study is led by Dr. Carol Boliek at the University of Alberta Edmonton. This study is Funded by the Cerebral Palsy International Research Foundation and LSVT Global, Inc. Dr. Cynthia Fox is a co-investigator on the project and Dr. Lorraine Ramig a consultant.
Nine children are participating in the study this summer (another three children this Fall). Pre-treatment data collection included acoustic, physiological (respiratory kinematics and electromyography), and neural imaging (structural and functional). The children will complete 4 weeks of LSVT LOUD therapy and repeat the data collection process. Both during the four weeks of LSVT LOUD and for a 12 week follow-up period, the children will be utilizing the LSVT Companion System for their homework practice. At 12 weeks, a final data collection session will be completed.
This is the first ever study incorporating functional imaging in a speech treatment study for children with cerebral palsy and dysarthria. Congratulations to Dr. Boliek and her entire team for their groundbreaking efforts!
